BERYLLIUM EMERGENCY. Any occurrence such as, but not limited to, equipment

failure, container rupture, or failure of control equipment or operations that results in an
unexpected and significant release of beryllium at a DOE facility. [10 CFR 850.3]

BERYLLIUM-INDUCED LYMPHOCYTE PROLIFERATION TEST (Be-LPT). An in
vitro measure of the beryllium antigen-specific, cell-mediated immune response. [10 CFR
850.3]

BERYLLIUM WORKER. A current worker who is regularly employed in a DOE
beryllium activity. [10 CFR 850.3]

BIOASSAY. The determination of kinds, quantities, or concentrations, and, in some
cases, locations of radioactive material in the human body, whether by direct measurement
or by analysis, and evaluation of radioactive materials excreted or removed from the
human body. [10 CFR 835.2]

BREATHING ZONE. A hemisphere forward of the shoulders, centered on the mouth and
nose, with a radius of 6 to 9 inches. [10 CFR 850.3]

BREATHING ZONE. A hemisphere forward of the shoulders with a radius of
approximately 6 to 9 inches (i.e., an area as close as practicable to the nose and mouth of
the employee being monitored for a chemical or biological hazard). Breathing zone
