Suggested Learning Activities:
6.1-6.3
Review and discuss, with an operations manager, the role of the shift
supervisor in observing facility activities. Discuss the techniques for
observing personnel performance and facility conditions (e.g., material,
cleanliness, and industrial safety conditions) in a thorough and critical
manner as part of the normal routine for the shift supervisor.
Emphasize really "seeing" what exists, application of observation
results, and taking action (i.e., reinforcing what is correct or taking
action to correct deficiencies).
6.4
Perform a structured exercise of observation skills on operations
activities (i.e., operators performing tasks or technicians or workers
performing tasks that have a direct effect on facility operations) and
inspection of facility conditions (e.g., material, cleanliness, and
industrial safety conditions). Facility observations (including facility
tours) with the operations manager or an experienced shift supervisor
can be useful in providing the experience. Simulator activities and
videotaped operational activities may also be useful in providing the
experience.
