Radiological Safety Training for Radiation-Producing (X-Ray) Devices
Student's Guide
Examples of administrative controls include:
Posting.
Warning signals and labels.
Work control documents such as SOPs and RWPs.
Examples of engineered controls include:
Interlocks.
Shielding.
For high-radiation areas where radiation levels exist such that an individual could exceed a
deep dose equivalent of 1 rem in any 1 hour at 30 cm from the source or surface that the
radiation penetrates, one or more of the following features shall be used to control exposure:
A control device that prevents entry.
A device that prevents use of the radiation source while personnel are present.
A device that energizes a visible and audible alarm.
Locked entry ways.
Continuous direct or electronic surveillance to prevent unauthorized entry.
A device that generates audible and visual alarms in sufficient time to permit evacuation.
In addition to the above measures, for very high radiation areas ( areas accessible to
individuals in which radiation levels could result in an individual receiving a dose in excess of
500 rads in 1 hour), additional measures shall be implemented to ensure individuals are not
able to gain access.
