Instructor's Guide
For employees to be motivated, there must
be a clearly defined relationship between
performance and rewards (compensation
system). There also has to be a link between
effort and performance. The supervisor must
be aware of an individual's effort and
consequent performance.
The supervisor must provide feedback to the
employee that will enable the link between
effort and performance to be more direct.
C. Reinforcement theories
The basic tenet underlying reinforcement
theories is that people are motivated by rewards
for their behavior. People work because they
are rewarded. A reward is considered
something of value to the employee. The most
basic is compensation (pay, benefits, leave
time). Other rewards include recognition and job
prerequisites. Following this theory, supervisors
