4. GENERAL GUIDANCE
4.1
Document Identification. Standardization documents are assigned a
Functional Area identifier from the list in Appendix A. This list is an updated
version of the DoD Standardization Areas, as identified in SD-1, modified for
DOE Technical Standards. If applicable, DOE Technical Standards may be
assigned a more detailed FSC or FSG number, as presented in DoD Handbook
H2-1, in place of the Functional Area identifier. Following are some
examples:
v a standard on "Fire Protection" would be ca talogued under Functional
Area "FIRP";
v a standard on "Training" would be categorized under Functional Area
"TRNG";
v a standard on "Packing of HEPA Filters" would be categorized in the
more specialized Federal Supply Class "FSC 4460."
The DOE Technical Standards Style Guide defines the usage of applicable
FSC, FSG, and Functional Area assignments and specifies that they appear in
the lower right corner of the cover page of a DOE standard, specification,
handbook, or TSL. All DOE Technical Standards are listed in the Department
of Energy Standards Index , DOE-TSL-1, and include this assigned Functional
Area, FSC, or FSG classification as a part of the listing.

Identification of Points of Contact. The following paragraphs of this
TSL further identify the various points of contact for the DOE Technical
