4.3
Respirators. The employer shall provide effective training to
29CFR1910.134(k)
employees who are required to use respirators. The training must be
comprehensive, understandable, and recur annually and more often
if necessary.
4.3.1
This paragraph also requires the employer to provide the basic
29CFR1910.134, App. D
information on respirators found in Appendix D of
29CFR1910.134 to all employees who wear respirators,
including those who do so voluntarily (this includes dust
masks).
4.3.2
The employer shall ensure that each employee can demonstrate
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)
knowledge of at least the following:
4.3.2.1 Why the respirator is necessary and how improper fit,
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)(i)
usage, or maintenance can compromise the protective
effect of the respirator;
4.3.2.2 What the limitations and capabilities of the respirator
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)(ii)
are;
4.3.2.3 How to use the respirator effectively in emergency
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)(iii)
situations, including situations in which the respirator
malfunctions;
4.3.2.4 How to inspect, put on and remove, use, and check the
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)(iv)
seals of the respirator;
4.3.2.5 What the procedures are for cleaning, maintenance and
29CFR1910.134(c)(1)(v);
storage of the respirator;
29CFR1910.134(c)(1)(viii);
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)(i);
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)(v)
4.3.2.6 How to recognize medical signs and symptoms that may
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)(vi)
limit or prevent the effective use of respirators; and
4.3.2.7 The general requirements for Respiratory Protection
29CFR1910.134(k)(1)(vii)
found in 29CFR1910.134.
4.3.3
The training shall be conducted in a manner that is
29CFR1910.134(k)(2)
understandable to the employee.
4.3.4
The employer shall provide the training prior to requiring the
29CFR1910.134(k)(3)
employee to use a respirator in the workplace.
