II. MODULE OUTLINE

ALARA Program 
ALARA stands for As Low As Reasonably Achievable. 
ALARA is an approach to radiation safety that strives to 
manage and control doses (both individual and 
collective) to the work force and the general public to as 
low as is reasonable taking into account social, technical, 
economic, practical, and public policy considerations.

EO1 State the ALARA

ALARA stands for As Low As Reasonably Achievable.

Because some risk, however small, exists from any 
radiation dose, all doses should be kept ALARA. 
ALARA includes reducing both internal and external 
radiation dose.

activities that involve the use of sources of ionizing 
radiation.

DOE Management Policy for the ALARA program 
EO2 State the DOE/Site 
management policy for the

Radiation doses are well below regulatory limits. 
There is no radiation exposure without an overall 
benefit.
