4. CONTINUING TRAINING
Continuing training should be conducted on a biennial cycle and based on job performance.
Continuing training in technical and administrative subjects should be provided to help ensure
that shift supervisors maintain and improve their job proficiency. Continuing training should not
be a repeat of the initial-training program, rather it should build on the knowledge and skills that
the individual gained during initial-training program. Specific areas that should be part of a
continuing-training program include, but are not limited to, the following:
C
Facility and industry operating experience
C
Conduct of operations
C
Facility self-assessment
C
Abnormal and emergency procedures
C
Changes to applicable facility procedures, codes, and standards
C
Significant facility systems, components, and equipment changes
C
Changes to Technical Safety Requirements
C
Selected topics from the initial-training program to correct identified weaknesses and
performance problems
C Selected fundamentals with emphasis on seldom-used knowledge and skills necessary to
assure safety
C Lessons learned and near-miss events
C Topics requested by shift supervisors or management.
When performance deficiencies or training weaknesses are noted, the continuing training
program can serve to upgrade the skills and knowledge level of the incumbent. For further
guidance in developing, implementing, and evaluating a continuing training program, refer to
the DOE Guide to Good Practices for Continuing Training.
The participation and performance of shift supervisors in the continuing training program should
be documented. Documentation should be in a form that is easily auditable.
