Construction Management personnel shall demonstrate a familiarity level

knowledge of the construction and operation of basic mechanical components.

b. Describe the basic construction and operation of the following types of valves:

c. Discuss the function and application of the following types of filters/strainers used in

mechanical fluid flow systems and ventilation systems:

Cartridge filters

Pre-coated filters

Bucket strainers

Deep-bed filters

HEPA filters

Particulate filters

Duplex strainers

d. Discuss the causes of water hammer and pressure spiking.

e. Describe the operation of a compressed air system, including a discussion of the

basic function of each of the following components:

Moisture separator

Intercooler

After cooler

Receiver

Air dryer

Describe the basic operation of pressure regulating, temperature control, and flow

control valves in a process system.

g. Describe the basic operation of a heat exchanger used in a process system.

h. Describe the basic design and operation of a typical heating, ventilation, and air

conditioning (HVAC) system.
