safety requirements that, if altered or modified, would have a significant effect on safe
operation. [10 CFR 830.3]
143.
DESIGN LIFE. The time period during which satisfactory performance can be expected
for a specific set of service conditions. [DOE O 5480.EIA] [EH62dd1]
144.
DESIGNEE. A person delegated responsibility or authority by a formal memorandum or
letter. [DOE O 5480.31] [EH62dd1]

conducted with different parameters. [DOE G 420.1-2]
146.
DETONATION. A violent chemical reaction within a chemical compound or
mechanical mixture involving heat and pressure. A detonation is a reaction that proceeds
through the reacted material toward the unreacted material at a supersonic velocity. The
result of the chemical reaction is the exertion of extremely high pressure on the
surrounding medium, forming a propagating shock wave that is originally of supersonic
velocity. When the material is located on or near the surface of the ground, a detonation
is normally characterized by a crater. [DOE M 440.1-1]
